IN THEIR ROOM

Last night I got the chance to sit down and watch the first installment of In Their Room, an interview documentary by Travis Mathews. For this outing, Mathews followed readers of Butt Magazine into their bedrooms and documented them as they talked about sex and intimacy, while they lounged about their rooms listening to records, checked messages, and masturbated.

The series is the kind of voyeuristic outing that I live for. Mathews’ camerawork is involved without being intrusive, and watching the men in their bedrooms feels intimate and true. For the most part, Mathews’ subjects are calm and at ease, comfortable in their bodies and their evironments, and comfortable with their stories. (One of guys featured is photographer Parker Tilghman, who I’ve written about before.)

At the website for In Their Room, you’ll find additional text interviews, photographs and more videos about each of the men. The site is wonderful addition, adding depth to the men and giving them a chance to comment on the film itself.

Mathews’ began the series as an entry into Butt Magazine’s BUTT IN ASS show, but looks to continue the series. I hope he does, because I enjoyed this entry, and I’m looking forward to watching the series grow and expand.

Update 2: The video has been restored. Enjoy!
