RYAN MCGINLEY’S MOONMILK

I’m kind of surprised that I haven’t written about Ryan McGinley before; his work represents so much that I love in photography: spontaneity, youth, and freedom.

These photographs are from a series called Moonmilk, and feature McGinley’s usual skinny, young, and nude subjects lounging around in deep caverns. Each one is lit with shocking and unnatural light, a sharp contrast to the natural settings and subjects.

While most of the pictures in the series capture still, contemplative moments, my favorite of them all has to be the following (labled as “Wes (Falling) 2009″). It captures a lively moment that, despite its title, exemplifies the freedom found in so much of McGinley’s work:
