A GOOD LIFE

This blog is one year old today and I’m fairly impressed by that fact. That means that one year ago I decided to get serious about writing, and serious about finding an audience. So far, I think it’s going pretty well. You guys seem to be happy with my work and I’m happy to have you here.

Last night we went to see Jill Sobule and Erin McKeown perform together here in St. Louis. I don’t go to many concerts these days, but Jill Sobule holds a special place in my heart. My partner was really big into her when we met, and her music was an important backdrop to the early days of our relationship. Over the course of three months we saw her three times. The first time, at PrideFest, we were just close friends. The second and third time we drove to Illinois to see her, twice in two weekends, and we were actually dating and in the early throes of lust that defines the beginning of so many relationships. Sobule’s music ended up on a lot of mixed CDs that he made me, representing nearly every other song on the first of many.

Last night’s show was amazing. Sobule and McKeown get a long like they were made to play together, and they did for a good portion of the show. It was nice to see two people perform together who obviously respect one another, and love one another’s music, and can move in and out of solos and duets with what appeared to be the greatest of ease. I’m still in a good mood this morning, left over from last night despite the fact that I got little sleep.

One of the songs Sobule played last night was called “A Good Life,” and it’s one of my favorites:

(the audio's not great in the video; you can download the song from Sobule's website, though.)

Fittingly, this photograph of Brian Kenny was one of the first things I ever posted on this blog:

The feeling of both the song and the picture very much hold true today. I live a good life. I live a happy life, and a lot of people are responsible for that. I have good family, good friends, and thanks to you guys, good fans.

Thank you for that.

P.S. McKeown and Sobule recorded a short internet show right before the concert started last night. Here's that video:
