TRAVIS MATHEWS WANTS YOU!

I've been meaning to re-post the casting call from Butt Magazine's blog about Travis Mathews' search for an actor. Mathews, the director and creator of In Their Room, is setting out to make a feature film. I'm a huge fan of the In Their Room series (I've written about it in the past) and I couldn't be more excited that Mathews is branching out to create a feature-length narrative film.

I asked him to say a little about why he wants to create a sexually explicit film:
"A lot of the positive feedback that I've gotten from the In Their Room series revolves around these guys being honest/vulnerable while it also being pretty to watch. So often, I think, people take sides and choose one over the other when making movies. For example, there's a lot of pretty, evocative or sexy stuff out there that is frankly pretty vapid. And on the flipside I've seen a lot of mumblecore movies that capture real slices of life without a lot of care to what the end product looks like. I understand the structural and aesthetic choices both are making, but I don't think that honesty needs to be divorced from something that is visually interesting to watch. That's one reason I'm making this feature.

Another is that I rarely see the people I'm friends with, and boys I have sex with, represented on screen. In the wake of Butt Magazine there's a palpable sense that someone is going to turn that scene into a feature film. It's about time, but it's also tricky, because it could easily turn into a tired 90 minutes of naval gazing with '70s nostalgia. There's a lot of glossy stuff already out there, I want to marry it with some honesty, naturalism and humor.

I think people are also desensitized to sex via the Xtube revolution. it's so much hotter to actually feel invested in the characters you jerk off to. It's like any movie, if you care about and maybe relate to the people you're watching you're more impacted when big things happen to them. I think the same can be said about them having sex.

I guess a final reason I want to make this movie is that I want to take Shortbus to the next level. JCM did an amazing job of displaying sexuality and diversity within sexuality. I can't say for sure, but I think that was his goal first and foremost, not to make a film that also got  you off. There are hot scenes in Shortbus, for sure, but for me it was more about the expression of sexuality, not sex. I'd like to make something that has a bit of both."
After reading that, I'm even more excited about the project. I can't wait to see it—Mathews is turning out to be someone shares my own views about sex, sexuality, art and culture, a kind of brother in sexual philosophy.

If his project sounds like something you'd be interested in taking part in, you're in luck. Mathews is currently looking for help:

IN THEIR ROOM filmmaker, Travis Mathews, is in pre-production on a feature and in search of male talent.
This is a paid ($500) gig that involves naturalistic acting and real sex.

Before going into full production Mathews is filming a demo scene in San Francisco in late February.
He’s in search of a mid/late 20s man to play opposite, and bottom to, the lead whom is already cast.
Are they really doing it? Yep. Is it just a fuck scene? No. The 15 minute demo is as preoccupied with sex as it is
the playful and intimate narrative preceding it.

To be considered for this part, you must: • be available for full Sat/Sun daytime shoot in addition to 2 rehearsals in SAN FRANCISCO during the last 2 weeks in February
• be in your mid 20s-early 30s
• be comfortable naked, having sex on camera and bottoming (with condom)
• have a naturalistic acting ability with some comfort improvising
• bring part of yourself to the character
• have equal access to a playful sexuality and a thoughtful interior world. • be available for a screen test in SAN FRANCISCO

If Interested, email Travis Mathews: • at least 2 photos of yourself, a face and body shot
• reason for interest
• previous experience
• anything that might be important for us to know about you
• what city you live in
• questions you might have about the scene/feature, actor playing opposite you, logistics.

If you don’t meet some of the criteria there still may be a part for you in the feature.
