James Franco’s Butt, other things

In a naked appeal for my dollars, Flaunt Magazine has covered their latest issue with James Franco’s butt1:

I just returned from Kansas City. It was a work detour that came out of nowhere. I’m eager to write again. I didn’t have any time to write while I was there. We checked out the wonderful vegan options in town, and bounced around bookstores and comic book stores. I brought home a stack of new books. At one of the comic shops, writer Jason Aaron was just standing around, hanging out. He writes one of my favorite comics, Scalped.

Tuesday night, the waitress at Waldo Pizza recommended the most wonderful double-IPA but now I’ve forgotten what it was called. Waldo Pizza has a vegan menu and incredibly nice, awesome waitstaff.

We got muffins and scones and coffee at Mud Pie, a vegan coffeehouse. We ate Chinese food at The Blue Koi, a restaurant staffed by cute Kansas City hipsters.

St. Louis has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to feeding vegans.

While I was in Kansas City, I read a novella by Robert McCammon, The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs. It’s collected in a soon-to-be-released collection, The Hunter from the Woods from Subterranean Press.

The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs tells the story of Michael Gallatin, a British spy who’s tasked with infiltrating Berlin during World War II in order to distract Franziska Luxe, a German journalist, from her mission of exposing traitors within the Third Reich. Gallatin finds himself drawn to Luxe despite her role as a Nazi, and soon the two are caught up in a whirlwind romance. The book deals with the moral and emotional complexity of a damaged man who finds himself enraptured by an (un)questionably evil woman.

I came to McCammon’s work via another book, The Five, but I found that book to be hard to penetrate. While reading about McCammon, and reading his blog (I virtually always research writers and read interviews with them as I read their books.

The Room… caught me off guard. McCammon’s an incredibly talented writer, and the story of Gallatin and Luxe broke my heart; it’s erotic, exciting, and fraught with danger. McCammon beautifully twists between scenes of subterfuge, action, sex and romance in a way that made me care deeply for the characters, and made me want to strive to be a better writer. His language is clear and simple but manages to evoke a dramatic range of emotions and sensations and he presents a poetic view of Berlin as a war-torn city filled with debutantes who will continue the party at any cost. It’s in this backdrop that Gallatin and Luxe can continue their charade as though nothing is wrong between them, between their respective countries and ideologies.

The twist (not a plot twist, or a spoiler) is that Gallatin is a werewolf. He’s the star of McCammon’s earlier novel, The Wolf’s Hour.

That McCammon pulls all of this off in a story about a werewolf fighting Nazis is nothing short of astounding. Even if nothing interests you less than the topic of a werewolf fighting Nazis, I urge you to check it out.

The novella is available as a free download directly from Subterranean Press (scroll down to the bottom of the book description.)

The above illustrations are by Vincent Chong.

1: Noting of course that this may not, in fact, be Franco’s butt. Flaunt and Franco could very well be pulling one over on us all.

This isn’t just about me:

From “The Care and Feeding of Your Favorite Authors,” by Chuck Wendig:

Here’s what I’m exhorting. I’m asking that you take care of your authors. Think of them, perhaps, as little whisky-guzzling Tamagotchi. They require care and feeding lest they wither and die in a cubicle farm.

If you find an author you like, support them.

What does this mean?

It means, if they have other books? Buy ‘em. Now. Right away. It means, get on social media and say, “Hey, this book, this author? Some hot shit right here.” Ultimately, it means you’re spreading the word and trying to keep it so that they can buy things like food and mortgages and Bourbon. See an author at a con? Buy him a drink. Does the author have a Cafepress store? Buy something from it. Or donate on his donate button. Become a fan. Expect good storytelling in return. This is doubly true if you’re buying books at a bottom-dollar price. You do that and you like what you got out of the deal, then it’s up to you to make sure they don’t starve in a gutter somewhere while wasting away from a Bourbonless life tuberculosis.

Writers are part of your creative ecosystem. Don’t damage that ecosystem. Give back to it. I know that writers need you. I hope that it turns out that you need writers, too.

The New johnnymurdoc.com

So, this is the new design for johnnymurdoc.com; after working on Pillowbiter.net for so long, I decided that I wanted a sleek, simple design for this website. The functionality is still there (the pages above will still take you to all of my fiction, essays, comics, etc…) but it’s a little less flashy for now. I apologize for any broken links, all of the content is still more or less in order.

If you follow this website via RSS feed, please notice that the feed address has changed. The new feed address is:

http://www.johnnymurdoc.com/feed/

I still intend to blog here and update regularly, but the focus will be a little more personal, a little more about writing, and a little more random. I’ll still write about sex, and chances are that I’ll still post dirty pictures and videos.

Writing this just got interrupted by a sprawling two hour conversation about comic books and novels and television, about the structure of each medium and how it conflicts with or compliments the others, and also about criminal justice, the death penalty, and the nature of belief and the flaws of the human brain. N., I don’t know you don’t read this blog, but thank you for that conversation. It’s always wonderful talking with you, and while I wish that we could do it more in person, I certainly enjoy curling up in a chair with the phone pressed to my ear.

Congratulations on being a new uncle; an uncle is a wonderful thing to be.

That seems like a fitting way to wrap up this blog post.

ROBERT FRASER, BOYS IN THEIR UNDERWEAR, AND LESS

Robert Fraser, erotic comics writer and Class Comics business mastermind, has a blog! It’s a young blog, but it’s already a fantastic and sexy one. I’ve known Fraser for almost two years, ever since he and his partner Patrick Fillion agreed to publish Crash Course. I’ve always said that I don’t think I could have found nicer guys to work with, as both guys have been indispensable in help Crash, well, crash into this world.

One of the best features of Fraser’s blog, so far, has been previews of an upcoming comic he’s working on with artist Silencio called Beautiful Dead:

There’s more than one clue that the comic will be zombie-related in Fraser’s post, and I have to say that if he’s going for zombie porn, that’s a hard road to go down. However, these two panels (and the third, dirtier panel that you’ll have to check out his blog to see) are some of the hottest fucking illustrations I’ve seen in a long time. It’s as though Fraser and Silencio knew what kind of guys I dig, and then chose to have them enact one of my favorite fucking turn-ons. (That would be panel two, there.)

So, yeah, I’m looking forward to Beautiful Dead. Just a little bit. Make sure you check out Fraser’s blog for future updates about the comic, as well as all of the other random stuff he’s blogging about. (So far, this has ranged from porn to action figures; Robert Fraser is a man after my little blog-y heart.)

The site’s misbehaving with a youtube video I tried to embed, so I’m tucking it behind the “Read more…” tag, along with the dirty pictures. Click “Read more…” for a random sampling of photos from my Tumblr Feed:

TOO WARM TO BE A MIDWESTERN SEPTEMBER

I always feel like I’m in the stages of having big announcements, but then I never have big announcements. I’m currently working on a few different things that are huge for me. One of them has nothing to do with writing, the other one has everything to do with writing. All of these projects have long timelines and co-conspirators. I kind of miss the days where I can write something and then get feedback from fans of it in a day or two. This is part of the growing process for writers, I guess.

Courtesy of Francois Sagat’s blog comes a video shot by photographer Elvis Di Fazio. Everyone should know by now that I’m a (no longer reluctant) huge fan of Sagat’s. I write about him enough, after all.

HANDWRITTEN PORN

I have a Tumblr, now. I’m not migrating, or anything, and I’m not entirely positive what I plan on doing with it, other than sharing some of the hot pictures I find on other people’s Tumblr blogs. Right now you can see part of the feed in the right hand column of this blog. In the future, that might change. In the meantime, if you have a Tumblr that you think I’d enjoy (be it yours or someone else’s) be sure to let me know. Again, my Tumblr future is not certain, but I’m up for experimenting.

Last night we got home late and, as I prepared to crawl into bed, I got the sudden urge to write. With all of our computers off, I decided to do something drastic and actually write by hand. I wrote two pages in a small notebook and called it quits for the night. Today, I took the notebook with me to work and wrote another sixteen pages. I can’t say that I enjoy writing by hand anymore but it was nice to be able to write when I wanted to, to get a thought down while I was having it.

I thought I’d show off a couple of the pages; they’re barely legible and reveal what happens when I have to write on a tiny notepad, and write quickly as I can with the thoughts coming at me at a speed usually best dealt with by typing. This story didn’t exist before yesterday, wasn’t even half an idea in my head or an inkling of a plot, but now it’s roughly 1200 words long and just getting started. I like it when this happens.

I’ve always been a big fan of DC Fuk!t’s work (you can check out my original post about them here). Recently they released a new video on how to use a condom starring Matthew Rush and Brent Corrigan. The video plays perfectly with the 50′s sex-ed formula but manages to do exactly what it is that I love about DC Fuk!t’s work: sexually explicit sex education. It’s hard to properly teach people how to practice safer sex when you can barely show a penis illustration, and it’s nice that someone out there has the balls to make sex education as graphic as sex is.

READING, WRITING AND ANIMAL ARITHMETIC

My partner just left for his book club (I told you we were gay geeks, didn’t I?) and I should be writing but I just decided that now would be a good time to catch up on blog feeds. This is a bad idea. Clicking through blog feeds when I should be writing leads me to a momentary short attention span that makes it impossible to focus, outside of clicking the space bar ad infinitum (or ad nauseum?).

I finished reading Under the Dome yesterday, and loved it despite its flaws. You would think that finishing an incredibly long book would make me want to read a short book, but now I find myself considering reading The Stand. I’ve read about half of the book before (but got distracted from it when a new Neil Gaiman book came out), but I realized yesterday that it’s been five years since I read that half (holy shit, where did time go?) so I should probably start from the beginning again. Stephen King is one of those writers that I find myself getting obsessed with. Not crazy obsessed, like stalker-y obsessed, just focused on. This is part of my inherent geekiness: I obsess over the things I love. The box of dozens upon dozens of Star Wars novels currently boxed up at my mother’s house is a grand example of this. When I love something I really love it and I consume a ton of it.

Artist Ryan Kelly did a great pinup illustration of Morrissey that I thought you guys would appreciate. It’s been a few years since I’ve gone on a Smith’s jag, but I do really adore Strangeways, Here We Come:

Have you stopped by The Summer Diary Project, lately? Mr. Mecca constantly curates some of the sexiest pictures on the net. Two that I caught today both had similar quality, in that they immediately created stories in my head when I saw them. The first photo is by Andy Houghton, who I’ve written about before.

Edited to note: A reader wrote to tell me that the following photograph was taken by
Eli Hue. You can see more from the series, starring ex-footballer Chris Lawrence, at Queerty.

I can’t credit the second photo, because I don’t know who took it. If anyone knows, please let me know in a comment, or e-mail me.* (Crediting is one of the great flaws of Tumblr blogs, and I don’t know if it’s just inherent in the framework or the people who use it. There’s often a trail of other Tumblr blogs where the image came from but they often lead to dead ends when it comes to actually crediting the work. It’s like the very worst of blogging: giving credit to people who talk about art, instead of the artists. I do my best to credit everything that I post and I always struggle with posting something I can’t credit.) Still, the image ignited my imagination.

Both images invoked some sexy post-apocalyptic stories, so hopefully you’ll see those in the future.

Jónsi of Sigur Rós released his first solo album this week, and you can stream the entire thing on the website, or (conveniently) here:
http://cdn.topspin.net/widgets/bundle/swf/TSBundleWidget.swf?timestamp=1270743449

I’ve always enjoyed Sigur Rós’s music, so I’m looking forward to this, as well. I especially love the second song, Animal Arithmetic.
